Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi. It is known to be spread through the bite of infected black legged ticks, but some studies suggest other means of transmission, including other infected insects. Symptoms vary between individuals, but range from fever like symptoms (fever, headache, fatigue) to a rash (not always a bullseye rash), to all over body pain. If not treated immediately, the bacteria disseminates throughout the body infecting joints, the heart, lungs, brain, and entire nervous system.
Lab testing is helpful for diagnosis, but also can be inconclusive. It is a smart bacteria that can go dormant at the first sign of antibiotic treatment, which is why it is imperative that when your first round of 30 days of treatment are finished, you begin a 10 day probiotic to build the gut flora followed by another round of antibiotic treatment for those pathogens that survived the first round in dormancy and have reappeared.
The reason why Lyme persists beyond this is due to incomplete removal of the pathogen as well as environmental stressors that effect the immune system's ability to ward off the persistent growth during weekend immunity.

I was diagnosed late and even then had antibiotics
